Let me know if you have any questions but at least I solved my own problem and it may work for others who were experiencing similar problems. Again this is to connect to a printer that is physically connected to an old desktop on a local network.

So the secret is to use the manual setup, in my case.

It shows two sided manual printing which is what I was trying to get.

After I did that, it used the driver that I had downloaded previously and now it works perfectly. Then all I did was copy the setting from my Windows 7 machine and set it up as a local port starting with the computer name starting with \\HOME-PC\HP Photosmart C4600 series. What really needs to be done is to select the bottom choice Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings. After it installed when I Iooked at printer properties, the port was USB001 virtual printer port for. When I first installed it, on the Find a printer by other options, I selected the second choice of Select by a shared printer name.

I dumped an Epson printer a bit over a year ago, replaced with this PhotoSmart C4680 - Thinking ( wrong!) HP would give better quality - Any suggestions on how to get this one working, Black only ok, or a better quality printer would be most welcome. If I return the color cartridge, after cleaning, cursing, pleading - I am left with the " Print Cartridge Error" and then NOTHING works. When I bring up Device Services, Print a Test Page, and Print a Sample Page - Work! But align, clean, etc do NOT.Ĭycling on and off and shaking juju sticks yields silence - no printing or anything other than the Sample/ Test print - which looks good, BTW. But all my print commands yield - silence - no action, as if it has nothing to print and no indication of why. But now I want it to use only the black cartridge, which shows half full. When I remove the tri-color cartridge, I get the "Print Cartridge Missing or not detected" - obviously, this is what I'd excepted. I suspect more than the "Print Cartridge Error" that it's telling me.
